Vessel Safety Check

At your dock, a trained member of the Auxiliary may conduct a Vessel Safety Check - a free examination of your vessel to confirm it meets federal and state safety requirements. We do not report the results to any enforcement agency, but if your vessel passes the exam, we give you a decal to display.

Some items checked:
  • Personal Flotation Devices (life jackets)
  • Registration and numbering
  • Navigation lights
  • Engine compartment ventilation (gasoline engines)
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Distress signals (flares, horn, etc.)
  • Battery cover and connections
State and federal laws require these items. If your vessel gets inspected by the Coast Guard, and they find items get found missing, you could get a citation.

The Vessel Safety Check gives you a risk-free way to check that you meet the legal minimums and to potentially avoid a citation later. Click on the link to see more detail about what's involved in a free, confidential Vessel Safety Check.
